Letter from Albert Clute to Ozellah Koon Jan. 11, 1865 Albert says he received Ozellah's letter but has put off responding until now. He is happy to hear that Ozellah's health is good and passes along that he is also healthy. He had a hard time when he first entered the service but has gotten over that and filled out. He hasn't heard from home since December 8th of 1864. He describes life as a soldier as always being cold and hungry, and says he will not allow himself to get homesick. They have been on half rations since the first of December, and he describes some of the food they have eaten in that time. They expect to have full rations again soon, because communication has been reopened and the government is sending them supplies. He looks forward to a reunion once he gets out of the service, and urges everyone to write. |
