  1. Brochure - Souvenir program of the 34th annual convention of the National Dental Convention, which was held in Detroit, Michigan, Aug 11-15, 1947. This 80 page souvenir program has a staple-bound blue-green cover with orange print that bears the title and the oval seal of the National Dental Association. The booklet printing is all black and white, and features writing by and about members and leadership of the National Dental Association, often with head shots or group shots of the people named. There are also images of Detroit buildings and landmarks and advertisements of different sizes, from many local and some national advertisers. Some of the entists photographed here were featured in Dr. Harris' 1992 article, "Michigan's Black Dental Heritage." The cover shows some yellowing and discoloration. A loose note tucked in plastic inside says "Donated by the family of the late Dr. Ira Whitby." The note is on the front of a card on cream colored stationery with navy trim around the edge. On the top border there's a rust mark in the shape of a paper clip. Inside the program: Page 2 features a black and white aerial photograph of Detroit's Rackham Memorial Building (100 Farnsworth Street, to disambiguate from other Rackham namesake buildings). An essay called "Yesterday and Today" by Haley Bell, DDS describes the history of black citizens and black businesses in Detroit on page 3 and is continued on page 13. Page 4 includes a photograph of a plaque commemorating Horace B. Rackham with a round inlay of his bust in bas relief. Page 5 includes copies of typed letters on official letterhead, offering well wishes for this convention from Edward J. Jeffries, Jr., the Mayor of Detroit, and from Michigan Governor Kim Sigler. Page 9 has a romantic description of Detroit and a cityscape photo with City Hall in the foreground. Page 7 (numbers are out of order) features a letter from Dr. Robert H. Thompson, president, welcoming attendees and discussing the progress the group has made since its founding in July 19, 1913. Thompson is pictured in a photograph. He writes that the program "clearly demonstrates the efforts being put forth by the Negro members of the dental profession of America to keep abreast with modern dental science and practice." Another letter on page 11 is from Dr. William L. Postles, Convention Chairman, welcoming attendees to the Wolverine State. Dr. Postles' letter is accompanied by a photograph of him. Page 12 features a full-page group photograph of the Wolverine Dental Society. No names are given for this photograph. 15 men in suits and ties stand in the back row (Two of their pictures are collaged in from another photo), and a sixteenth person's face barely visible on the right edge. Seated in front of them are 11 suited men. Many are smiling, some more serious. Opposite this photo on page 13 is a note from Chairman of the Citizen's Committee John C. Dancy. Page 13 also features the end of Dr. Bell's essay from page 3. Page 15 begins a series of head shot portraits: Dr. E. W. Taggart, President-Elect, Dr. R. A. Dixon, Vice-President, Dr. W. M. Springer, Chairman, Executive Board, and Dr. M. L. Walton, Secretary, Executive Board. Page 17 has a group shot of five men seated around a desk, captioned "Editor of Bulletin of National Dental Association, Dr. S. J. Lewis and his staff." Beneath this are two single portraits, one of Dr. William D. Giles, Chairman, Committee on Program National Dental Association and another photo, ofDr. M. R. Dean, Chairman, Committee on Publicity, National Dental Association. Page 19 features prose titled "Detroit... the City Beautiful" printed over a photograph of first Michigan Governor Stevens T. Mason's memorial statue looking out into the city's skyscrapers. Page 21 features a detailed list about conference locations, different places throughout the city, membership fees and registration information, and a credit to the official event photographer, Robert Moseley, a dental student who "will have headquarters in the Rackham Building." Images from Detroit's "finer residential section" are featured on pages 23, 25, and 27. Page 28 has a large photo portrait of Dr. Rayford W. Logan, Professor of History, Howard University. Logan was guest speaker for the public meeting on August 12. Page 29 has one large group photograph, captioned "President of Ladies' Auxiliary and Group of Her Committee Chairmen." Standing at back are Mrs. Mary Bell, Mrs. Thelma Biram, Mrs. Jeanetta Whitby. Seated are Mrs. Velma Malone, Mrs. Alberta Bowman, President, and Mrs. W. O. Terrell. Then more photographs of notable buildings: Page 31 shows two churches and two fraternity houses, the Second Baptist Church and St. Matthew's Episcopal, and Kappa Alpha Psi and Alpha Phi Alpha. On 33, four building photographs: The YMCA and YWCA, Ebenezer A.M.E. Church and Central Tennis Club. Page 35 pictures three "Typical Detroit Business Establishments," Porter's Dry Cleaners, Wayne Diagnostic Hospital, and the home office of the Michigan Chronicle. After page 36, the next four page numbers have been omitted with white-out but there are five pages of the actual event program.
