Summary |
This copy of an article or chapter is titled "The Non-White Dentist in Michigan" and is by Dr. James A. A. Catchings, whose credit in the text states he was a "Detroit Dentist, Past President, National Dental Association and Wolverine Dental Society." The article (2 pages) is photocopied from page 17-18 of the book The Negro in Michigan, which was published in 1968 by the Michigan State Chamber of Commerce. This copy of the article accompanied a note and resume by Dr. Catchings to Dr. Joseph B. Harris, presumably in response to Dr. Harris' request for information in researching his article "Michigan's Black Dental History" for the Journal of the Michigan Dental Association published January, 1992. The first page (p. 17) has a headshot of Dr. Catchings and another of Dr. Haley Bell. Two paragraphs of text continue on the second page. The article details the history of black dentistry in Michigan, from the first black dentists in the state, the dramatic arrival in Detroit of the "dean of today's black dentists" Dr. Haley Bell, the founding and growth of the Wolverine Dental Society. Also mentioned are the first black Detroit-area orthodontist (John Eagan, arrived in 1955), the first local black oral surgeon (Dr. R. E. L. Perkins), other early black dental specialists, and the 1964 arrival of "well-known militant and present Wolverine Dental Society president, Dr. Richard Vaughan." Dr. Catchings concludes that the professional gap was closing between people of different races and states the importance o fthe state of Michigan raising the quality of living for all its black and non-white residents. |
